About SAE J2340 420X
SAE J2340 420X is a hsla 60 grade cold rolled / hot rolled steel conforming to the sae standards. At 420 MPa minimum yield strength, this is high-strength steel for front-end structure components, rocker inners, and A-pillar reinforcements.
The X suffix denotes solution-hardened (micro-alloyed) HSLA steel with niobium, vanadium, or titanium additions for grain refinement and precipitation strengthening.
SAE J2340 420X is the upper-tier solution-hardened HSLA designation within the J2340 standard, providing substantially higher load-carrying capacity than the 380X grade through increased micro-alloy content and refined thermomechanical processing. This grade targets higher-stressed structural applications including A-pillar reinforcements, rocker panel inners, and front rail compression members where crash energy management demands both elevated strength and predictable deformation behavior.
Ameristeel maintains inventory of SAE J2340 420X in various gauges and widths, available as coils, sheets, or custom blanks. Our ISO 9001:2015 certified processes ensure consistent quality from prototype through production volumes.
Available coating options for SAE J2340 420X include Galvanized, Galvanneal, Electrogalvanized, providing corrosion protection and surface preparation suited to your manufacturing process requirements.
SAE J2340 420X at 420 MPa yield compares to SAE J2340 380X (40 MPa higher yield at 380 MPa) and SAE J2340 490X (70 MPa lower yield at 490 MPa). Selecting the right grade depends on the balance between strength requirements and forming complexity for your specific stamping application.
